Sports During a Pandemic

There’s no hiding it. We are a competitive sports family. It’s in my blood. It’s in Cristina’s blood. Our kids all got this trait from us. Competition is something we eat, sleep, and breathe.

We were ready. We had “The Bigs” (Carmelo & Marina) signed up for their Spring sports season, and they were so excited! We were so excited, because we love to see them compete, and watch their talent grow from season to season. We spent hundreds of dollars to get all of their new equipment. Me and Cristina have always said, “if they play bad, at least they’re gonna look good doing it.” (LOL) It was time to get out there and show the rest of the league what we’re made of!

Then Boom!

Season cancelled! Now what do we do? Yeah there are still leagues/tournaments going on, but that just makes me question the coaches and grownups that are supposed to be making “grownup decisions.” There’s really not a great option at this point in time for our kids to go out there and compete. So at this point we just sit and wait.

We’ve been invited to play in some youth “e-sports” tournaments, but haven’t taken up that offer yet. I think the next time we get invited, we’ll do it. It’s just not the same kind of competitiveness we’ve been searching for, but at least it’s something.

There’s always pro sports…

Before the kids got old enough to play, I always just relied on pro sports to get my fix. That too has been taken away. The NBA season stopped right in the home stretch. The MLB teased me with a couple of weeks of Spring Training, then called it off. English Premiere League Soccer came to a halt as well. What the heck am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to watch on TV? I didn’t realize the only thing I really watched on live TV was sports. With no sports, I’ve been reduced to watching “The Floor is Lava” on Netflix, and re-runs of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” (Both great shows by the way)

This pandemic got me looking at my TV like:

Silver Lining

Pro sports are slowly returning. The English Premiere League Soccer has already started (with nobody in the stands). Baseball is getting ready to start their practice games this weekend, and the NBA will start their tournament in a couple weeks. Things are starting to get back to normal.

If we all do our part, we’ll be able to see our children flourish on the field/court soon enough. We can’t wait to get back out there and watch them run around with those smiles on their faces.

What have y’all been doing to keep your kids going during this pandemic? Anyone else miss sports just as much as we do?
