Mask Wearing. We doing it or nah?

The Science

Lately I’ve been feeling annoyed when I go somewhere and someone isn’t wearing a mask. When high level scientists and doctors are saying it’s best to wear a mask to protect others around you, I heed their advice. I just put my mask on. I’m not some kind of conspiracy theorist thinking they’re trying to control my life.

The thing is, if you understand the science behind it, your mask is to protect the people around you incase you have COVID-19. It doesn’t really protect you at all, unless you’re wearing a hospital grade N95 mask. Lately, when I see someone without a mask I feel offended. Like a rage burning deep within my soul. (Okay, that’s dramatic but seriously) I’m at the point where I feel disrespected when someone isn’t wearing their mask.

The Disrespect

Look, seriously, I’m not going to punch you in the face for disrespecting me. Even though I might want to, I’m not going to do it. If you’re a stranger, I’ll just ignore you and walk the other way. Kind of like if I’m walking past someone who’s smoking a cigarette. I won’t say anything because that’s your choice.

I won’t be disrespected at work though. If I pass someone not wearing a mask, I sarcastically yell “put a mask on.” However, I’m serious and not being sarcastic at all. That’s the cool thing about my personality. It comes across sarcastic, but also makes you think “is he for real right now?” Yes, Karen. I’m for real right now.

The Humor

Nothing is funnier than walking from your car to the front door of a store with your mask on, and someone else sees you, touches their face and goes “Oh CRAP! My mask.” Then they have to walk all the way back to their car. (LOL) I don’t know why that’s so hilarious to me. I have my mask on so they can’t see me smile or chuckle at their situation.

It honestly just reminds me of a superhero or something. Like they go out into public and forget their mask, and go “Oh CRAP! My mask!”

The Exceptions

If we’re outside, I don’t really care if you wear your mask or not. The science says it’s most dangerous when your indoors, and close to each other. The air just sits there circulating, and it’s easier to catch a virus that way. When you’re outdoors the virus can dissipate and fall out of there air easier.

“Matt, I see you hanging out with family though.” Yeah I do. I also know that we all take the same precautions. I trust the fact that our family is safe wherever they go, and don’t do unnecessary activities to expose themselves. As working parents we have to trust the people closest to us. We believe in the people who watch our kids while we work.

Be smart

At the end of the day, do what you feel is best for you and your family. If you feel like that’s not wearing a mask, and going against every piece of scientific evidence out there, then so be it. If you want to just be disrespectful to others, and have no regard for human life during a pandemic, go for it.

….or you could just be smart.

Peace!
